Can you drink? Sure you can. But being in dark about how much alcohol exactly is there in your system before you hit the wheels doesn’t have to be a guessing game. Take a scientific approach. Measure it. Use a breathalyzer. You may think you’re not drunk but a breathalyzer can certainly decide otherwise. A BAC above 0.07% can severely strain at the shards of your otherwise normal life. You may be able to escape 99% of the times but that 1% of the chance is not worth it; not at least in this economy when a mere $25 could have saved you all the trouble and expenses.

Breathalyzers are available starting from $25 for small cell-phone sizes to highly accurate gizmos that can tell you with pin-point precision whether you’re safe to drive or not.

Ashok, who weighs a lot more than me can also down more beers than me; BAC wise speaking...
Ashok: “Get Lost” All rights reserved.
Oh, and don’t just brush this off as something that happens to others. It could happen to anybody. Worse is to assume that as long as you feel you’re not drunk, you’re really not drunk. I was taken aback myself when I found out that just 3 beers could mean a BAC of 0.09 for me. Gah! Such a contrast to Ashok (left) who, despite downing 5 beers ends with a BAC reading of 0.04
Also, the effect of alcohol on every individual varies. So, testing below the recommended limit of 0.08 is no guarantee that you’re fit to drive! Use your own judgment.

Just to give you an idea, here are my BAC readings after just one and two beers respectively.

Blood Alcohol Concentration after 1 Heineken Blood Alcohol Concentration after 1 Heineken

For those of your wondering whether eating, mints or any other tricks actually affect your Blood Alcohol level, here’s the answer; Nothing, nothing can dampen the readings on a breathalyzer. The only thing that can lower your BAC is time. Everybody has different metabolism rates so the amount of alcohol that gets absorbed in your bloodstream varies from person to person. Drinking on an empty stomach merely gives you a high quickly but drinking after food does not appreciably reduce your BAC. Neither does eating after drinking.

So, have fun but know how safe you are to drive. Stay away from trouble. Peace!

    Why not have a designated driver. That would solve all these issues and you can drink to any extent you want. Also, will make me feel safer on the road. (Cant imagine Ashok tailgating me after 5 beers :-P)

    Being that I am a current expert in this area, I would say that having any alcohol in your system here in California can get you into trouble. I'm currently finishing up DUI school and they pretty much can give you a wet and wreckless or DUI at even a .02 or .04 if they feel that you are not fit to drive. A lot of that can be due to being tired with an empty stomach, or just having a low tolerance. After everything that I've just gone through, I want to tell everyone that it's not worth it. 3 months of your time doing dui school, a bunch of weekends working in the sheriffs work program, about 10k of cost, and the sheer torment of not having your license is a really screwed up outcome of just having a few drinks with your friends. So how do you get around this problem? Plan things out. If you know your going to drink, find alternate forms of transportation, catch a ride with a dd, or take a cab. Sometimes purchasing a hotel room to make sure your safe can also be a good bet. The consequences of just saying "I'll never get caught", can become a huge nightmare in a literal minute. Take care everyone, and have a safe holiday season.

    Also, if you are a resident alien, struggling through the Green Card application process, you can kiss your US citizenship goodbye if you're DUI'ed even once.
    And, you'd get to know about this only in the interview process. So all those years waiting for your green card and then for the citizenship could be of no use in an instant.

    I'm not sure if getting high on Red Bull is the same as alcohol. Technically its still called 'drinking' isnt it? What's a young gun, social,web 2.0 person, the generation-X 'etc' doing ... preaching teeto-tallin' anyway ? Why Sir? Why?

      @Kalyani
      Designated driver? Any-time. Doesn't mean I won't drink. I'd just not drive until I'm <0.03 happy
      Would you mind waiting until I'm sober?

      No, I didn't register for YEP. I think its meant for bachelors or DINKS only big grin, if you know what I mean. Ha! I'm neither.
